Silience

defined as the kind of unnoticed excellence that carries on around you everyday, unremarkably.

For the Fall 2022 yearbook for New Jersey Technical Institute, layout members of the yearbook club had to encapsulate the meaning of silience visually through six different sections, while sharing cohesive elements. We were supplied a design guide with standard, universal elements such as color palettes, fonts, text sizes, accent colors etc.

To draw emphasis to certain elements on a spread we used with predesigned standard ellipses. To help viewers navigate a spread we had the freedom to make stylized stroke swoops to have the eyes follow a determined flow. Cut outs were also large part of the design of Silience, which allowed the eye to focus more on the action captured in the photo and is also accompanied by a one-line drawing. Creative expressive images were used throughout the book to help express ideas and concepts talked about in the writing while also adding visual interest to the page.

used to celebrate Nucleus Yearbook 100th anniversary and NJIT's history.

For the Fall 2023 yearbook, we chose “100” in the literal sense that it is our 100th anniversary, but we chose to draw from the fond memories and moments captured throughout the past 100 years. We aim to compare how student life has changed while keeping in focus on how similar our current experiences are with the students of the past.

When flipping through old yearbooks, we noticed they were mainly in black and white except for the early 2000s where there is a mix of black and white and color. Graphically, we pull from the Red Green Blue (RGB) color scheme as an ode to the photography that was prevalent in the majority of our books up until 2010. As a whole, the tones became the shades for our graphic elements, which were inspired by Art Deco motifs.
